Description
The Mars M43346 is a low pressure switch with settings of approximately 25 and 50 PSI.
The consequences of a system running in a vacuum on the low side deserve emphasis, because it is the condition a low pressure safety is most importantly preventing.
When suction pressure falls below atmospheric, the pressure gradient at any leak reverses. Instead of refrigerant escaping, air is drawn in, carrying moisture with it.
Moisture in a refrigeration system is destructive in several ways. It reacts with the refrigerant and oil to form acids, which attack the compressor windings and produce the copper plating and blackened oil characteristic of a burnout. It freezes at the metering device, producing an intermittent restriction that appears and disappears with the system's operation. And it degrades the oil's lubricating properties.
A leak that would otherwise have simply lost refrigerant becomes a route for contamination that destroys the compressor, which is why a low pressure control set to stop the system before it reaches a vacuum is protecting against far more than the immediate loss of cooling.
