Klein Tools KLT3255 Bull Pin Broad head bull pins Larger striking surface

The Klein Tools KLT3255 is a broad head bull pin with a larger striking surface, 1-1/4 inch size, 13-3/4 inch long, in steel, with a 5/16 inch point diameter and 1-1/4 inch top diameter, black.

The broad head is the specification and it addresses a genuine hazard. A bull pin is driven with a hammer, repeatedly, hard — and the head takes every blow. A small head means a small target, which means missed strikes and, over time, mushrooming: the struck end spreads and eventually sheds fragments. Steel splinters off a mushroomed tool head travel at speed, and this is a well-documented cause of eye and hand injuries.

A larger striking surface gives more target and spreads the impact, which is both easier to hit and slower to mushroom.

The dimensions describe a long taper: 5/16 inch at the point and 1-1/4 inch at the top over 13-3/4 inches. That gradual taper is what makes the tool work — it is driven into misaligned bolt holes in structural steel, and the taper forces the members into register as it goes. A steeper taper would jam; this one draws.

At 13-3/4 inches this is the longer of the two pins in this range, giving more reach and more leverage.

Applications include structural steel erection, bridge work, and heavy fabrication.

Inspect the head and retire it once it mushrooms.
