Product Highlights
Description
The Klein Tools KLT3248 is a connecting bar, 30 inch round, 7/8 inch diameter.
A connecting bar — a drift pin, in most ironworkers' language — is a tapered steel bar used to align bolt holes in structural steel. It is driven into two holes that do not quite line up, and the taper does the work: as it is driven, it forces the members into register.
The reason it exists is that structural steel never lines up. Fabrication tolerances, thermal movement, erection sequence, and the sheer weight of the members mean holes arrive misaligned, and something has to pull hundreds of pounds of steel into position before a bolt can go through. That something is this bar and the ironworker's hammer.
At 30 inches this is a long bar, and length is leverage. Once seated, the bar is also a lever — it is pried against to bring members together. A short bar aligns; a long one persuades.
The 7/8 inch diameter suits the bolt hole sizes it is intended for. A bar too large will not enter; one too small does not register.
Round rather than a bull pin's broad head means this is for driving through and levering, not for striking a large surface.
Applications include structural steel erection, bridge work, and heavy fabrication.
