Johnson Controls Low Pressure Control P70AB-2C

The Johnson Controls P70AB-2C is a low pressure control for commercial refrigeration systems.

Connecting a pressure control to the system requires attention to where it senses and how it is connected.

A low pressure control senses suction pressure and is therefore connected to the low side, typically at a Schrader port or a flare fitting on the suction line or the compressor service valve. A high pressure control connects to the discharge side. Fitting either to the wrong side produces a control that either never operates or holds the circuit permanently open, and the error is easy to make on unfamiliar equipment.

The connection itself deserves care. Capillary tubes connecting pressure controls are vulnerable to fatigue where they are subject to vibration, and a capillary that has work hardened and cracked leaks refrigerant slowly and disables the control. Routing the capillary so it is supported and not subject to repeated flexing extends its life considerably.

A control whose bellows has lost its charge, or whose capillary has fractured, generally fails in the position that stops the equipment, which is the safer failure mode.

Applications include commercial refrigeration, walk-in coolers and freezers, display cases, and refrigeration racks.
