Johnson Controls Dual Pressure With Capacitor

The Johnson Controls P70LB-1C is a dual pressure control with an integral capacitor, combining high and low pressure protection in one device.

A dual pressure control contains two independent pressure elements, one sensing suction and one sensing discharge, with their contacts in series in the control circuit. Either condition, low suction or high discharge, opens the circuit and stops the compressor.

The advantage over two separate controls is practical: one device, one mounting, one set of wiring connections, and one point in the control circuit rather than two. On commercial refrigeration where panel space and installation time both matter, this is worthwhile.

The corresponding consideration at diagnosis is that a tripped dual control does not immediately reveal which element operated. Connecting gauges to both sides and observing pressures identifies whether the system tripped on high or low, and those are entirely different faults with entirely different causes.

Some dual controls indicate which element has operated, which shortens the diagnosis considerably.

Both elements are typically adjustable within their ranges, and both must be set to suit the refrigerant and the system's design conditions.

Applications include commercial refrigeration, walk-in coolers and freezers, condensing units, and refrigeration racks.
