The 3 to 10 inch range makes this the broadest wrap in the Jackson family, spanning from small-bore work up into the mid-range mains that most industrial pipe fitting revolves around. If a shop is buying one wrap, this range covers the most ground.

The reason to use one is geometric rather than a matter of care. There is no way to mark a square line around a pipe by eye — no edge to reference, no flat for a square. A freehand line spirals around the circumference and returns off its start, and a pipe cut to a spiral is cut out of square. That end will not seat flat against its fitting.
