The Irwin IRWIWHT48442RC is a STRAIT-LINE Speed-Line 100 ft chalk line reel with chalk, in red.

A chalk line marks a dead straight line across a distance no straightedge can span. The line is drawn from the reel, pulled taut between two points, lifted and snapped — depositing chalk along the perfectly straight path the tensioned string describes. It is a two-thousand-year-old technique and nothing has replaced it.

The chalk colour is a decision that catches people out, and red is the one to think about. Chalk colours differ in permanence: red and blue chalk are considerably more permanent than white, which is the point when a line must survive weather and traffic on a jobsite — and the problem when the line is on a surface that will be visible afterward. Red chalk on finished material can be very difficult to remove.

The rule that follows: permanent colours for layout that must last, white for anything that has to disappear.
