Irwin IRW2078209 Lineman Pliers North American lineman's pliers 9.5"

The Irwin IRW2078209 is a pair of North American pattern lineman's pliers, 9.5 inch.

Lineman's pliers are the electrician's primary pliers and the design is specific rather than general. The jaws are flat and heavily serrated for gripping and twisting conductors — twisting wire joints is what they exist for, and the leverage and grip are built around that action. Behind the jaws sit side cutters sized to cut the conductors the same electrician is working with.

The North American pattern designation is a real distinction. North American lineman's pliers have a different head geometry and proportion from European patterns, and electricians trained on one find the other awkward. It is worth ordering the pattern your customers actually use.

The 9.5 inch length is the standard size and it is chosen for leverage: twisting solid conductors together takes real force, and the handle length is what supplies it.

One point worth stating on any pliers sold to electricians: these are not insulated tools unless specifically rated and marked as such. Work on live circuits requires tools rated and tested for it — the plastic on a standard pair of pliers is grip, not insulation.

Applications include electrical installation, industrial maintenance, utilities, and telecom.
