Irwin IRW2011201 Hand Saw 15"

The Irwin IRW2011201 is a PROTOUCH coarse cut carpenter's saw, 9 PT, M2, 15 inch.

The 9 PT designation is points per inch and it is the specification that defines this saw. Points per inch governs the trade every hand saw makes: fewer, larger teeth cut faster and rougher; more, smaller teeth cut slower and cleaner. At 9 points this is a coarse cut saw — built for speed through framing lumber, dimensional timber, and rough work rather than for a finished edge.

Using it on trim would produce tearout. Using a fine-toothed saw to cut studs would be slow and tiring. The tooth count is the tool's job description.

The 15 inch blade is a compact length. A longer saw takes longer strokes and cuts faster in the hands of someone with room to swing; a 15 inch saw is the one that fits in a bag, works in a confined space, and gets carried up a ladder.

M2 is a hardened tooth specification, meaning the teeth are induction hardened for edge retention. Worth knowing: hardened teeth cannot be resharpened. This is a saw that is used until it dulls and then replaced, not maintained.

Applications include framing, rough carpentry, timber, general construction, and site work.
