Howell Metal Lineset 3/8"LL X 3/4"SL 61210300V

The Howell Metal 61210300V is a pre insulated refrigerant line set with a 3/8 inch liquid line and 3/4 inch suction line, supplied for air conditioning and heat pump installation.

A line set connects the outdoor and indoor sections of a split system, and the two tubes serve different purposes. The smaller carries liquid refrigerant from the condenser to the metering device. The larger carries low pressure vapour from the evaporator back to the compressor, and it is insulated because that vapour is well below ambient temperature.

Insulating the suction line is not optional. An uninsulated suction line absorbs heat from the surrounding air, which reduces capacity, and its surface falls below the dew point in humid conditions and condenses water continuously. That condensation stains ceilings, damages finishes, and where the line runs in a wall cavity it produces damp and mould.

The liquid line is generally left uninsulated because it runs warm, though insulating it improves subcooling on long runs and is worth doing in hot attics.

Line sizes are specified by the equipment manufacturer against capacity and run length, and substituting a different size affects refrigerant velocity and oil return. Undersized suction lines cost capacity, oversized ones may not maintain the velocity needed to carry oil back.

Confirm line sizes, length, insulation thickness, and connection type against the equipment specification before ordering. Protect the ends from contamination until connection.
