The Hart & Cooley 673TPI is a 20 by 20 inch return air filter grille with an R-6 insulated back, configured for installation in a T-bar suspended ceiling module.

The T-bar configuration is what distinguishes this from the surface mounted 673 grilles. Rather than being screwed to a finished ceiling, the unit drops into the suspended ceiling grid, and its dimensions suit the standard grid module rather than a cut opening.

The R-6 insulated back serves the same purposes as on a supply diffuser but for different reasons. In a return application, the insulation limits heat transfer between the return air and the ceiling plenum, which matters where the plenum is unconditioned, and it attenuates noise passing between the plenum and the occupied space. Where the ceiling void is used as a return plenum rather than ducted, an insulated back on a ducted return maintains the separation.

Combining a filter grille with a lay-in ceiling installation gives accessible filtration in commercial spaces where the equipment is remote or above an inaccessible ceiling area.

The unit must be supported independently of the ceiling grid, since a filter grille with an insulated back and a hinged face is a substantial weight to carry on the tees.
