The Hart & Cooley 43376 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 30 by 14 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

Return grilles are occasionally fitted with a damper by installers seeking to balance a system, and this warrants a caution. Balancing is performed on the supply side, at the branch dampers or at the supply registers, where restricting one outlet redirects air to others. Restricting a return does not balance anything; it simply reduces the total air the system can move, raising static pressure and reducing airflow across the coil.

Where a system has multiple returns and one is drawing disproportionately, the remedy is generally to correct the return duct sizing rather than to throttle a grille.

A related point applies to occupants closing return grilles in unused rooms. Where a return is fitted with any adjustable element, someone will eventually close it, and the system will run against the resulting restriction indefinitely without anyone connecting the two. Fixed bar return grilles avoid the possibility.
