The Hart & Cooley 43374 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 30 by 10 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

A 30 by 10 grille suits a wide opening with limited height, a shape that occurs frequently in retrofit work where the return must fit between existing framing or within a soffit built for other purposes.

Retrofit returns raise a question worth asking before the grille is selected: where does the air behind the grille actually go. In older houses, return openings frequently discharge into a stud or joist cavity that serves as an unlined duct, and those cavities are rarely airtight. A return drawing through a wall cavity that communicates with an attic, a crawl space, or an exterior wall assembly is pulling unconditioned, unfiltered air into the system continuously, which imposes a load the equipment was never sized for and introduces dust and moisture.

Many jurisdictions now restrict or prohibit building cavities used as return plenums for exactly this reason. Where an existing installation is found to use them, sealing the cavity or running proper duct is the remedy.

The 672 series carries no filter frame, so the system filter must be located at the air handler.
