Hart & Cooley 672 24X16 043367 White Return Air Grille

The Hart & Cooley 43367 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 24 by 16 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

Return grilles accumulate dust visibly, and more so than supply outlets. The reason is that air is being drawn through them from the room, so airborne dust and lint collect on the leading edges of the bars in a way that supply air does not produce. The dark line along the bars of a return grille is one of the more reliable indicators of a system running without adequate filtration, or of a filter that is not being changed.

Cleaning is straightforward: the grille is removed, washed, dried, and refitted. It is worth doing at the same interval as filter changes, since a grille with dust built up between the bars has reduced free area and correspondingly higher face velocity and noise.

Heavy accumulation on a return grille also warrants investigating the filter arrangement. If dust is reaching the grille face in quantity, it is also passing into the return duct and reaching the blower and coil.

The 24 by 16 inch size suits a moderate return airflow, as a primary return on a smaller system or one of several on a larger one.

The 672 series carries no filter frame. Applications include residential and light commercial return air openings.
