Hart & Cooley 672 24X14 043366 White Return Air Grille

The Hart & Cooley 43366 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 24 by 14 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

Mounting is worth attention on grilles of this size. Return grilles are normally secured with screws through the flange into the surrounding wall or ceiling material, and in drywall that means the fixings are carrying the grille's weight in a material with limited holding power. A grille repeatedly removed for cleaning, or one fitted to a ceiling where gravity works against the fixings, will progressively loosen and eventually pull free.

Fixing into framing where it is available, or using appropriate hollow wall anchors where it is not, resolves this. On ceiling installations, anchors rated for the grille's weight in tension are worth the small additional effort.

A loose return grille is not merely untidy. A grille that has pulled away from the surface leaves a gap around the flange through which air is drawn from the wall cavity or ceiling plenum rather than the room, which on a return in an exterior wall means drawing unconditioned air directly into the system.

The 672 series has no filter frame; the system filter is located at the air handler.

Applications include residential and light commercial return air installations in walls and ceilings.
