Hart & Cooley 672 24X12 043365 White Return Air Grille

The Hart & Cooley 43365 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 24 by 12 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

The 24 by 12 proportion is a wide, shallow grille, and that shape is chosen for a specific reason: it fits the space available. A return opening between two studs at 16 inch centres, or in a shallow soffit, or above a door, is constrained in one dimension and free in the other. A wide grille passes the required airflow through a shape that suits the opening rather than requiring the framing to be modified.

The trade-off in a shallow grille is free area relative to gross size. The frame occupies a proportionally larger share of a narrow grille than a square one, so a 24 by 12 grille passes somewhat less air per square inch of face than its nominal size suggests. Working from the manufacturer's published free area, rather than nominal dimensions, keeps face velocity and generated noise where they should be.

The 672 series has no filter frame, so the system filter must be located at the air handler.

Applications include residential and light commercial return air openings in walls, ceilings, and soffits, particularly where a conventional square opening cannot be accommodated within the existing framing.
