Hart & Cooley 672 20X30 043360 White Return Air Grille

The Hart & Cooley 43360 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 20 by 30 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

This is among the larger sizes in the series, sized for a high return airflow on a single grille. It suits the primary return on a larger residential system or a substantial light commercial return.

Large return grilles introduce a consideration that smaller ones do not: sound transmission. A large opening between a room and a return duct is also a large acoustic path. Where the return duct connects to a mechanical closet or runs past other rooms, noise travels readily along it, and a large grille provides the opening for that noise to enter the space. Equipment noise arriving through the return is a common complaint in houses where the air handler sits in a central closet with a large adjacent return grille.

Lined return duct, an offset or elbow near the equipment, and locating the return away from the equipment closet all reduce the effect. Distributing return airflow across several smaller grilles rather than concentrating it in one large opening also helps.

The 672 series carries no filter frame; the system filter is located at the air handler.

Applications include residential and light commercial return air installations in walls and ceilings.
