The Hart & Cooley 43357 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 20 by 20 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

A 20 by 20 inch return is a common residential size and one that illustrates a useful design principle: several moderate returns generally outperform one large one. Distributing return openings across the conditioned space, rather than concentrating them at a single central location, reduces the pressure difference between rooms when interior doors are closed.

That pressure difference is a real and frequently overlooked problem. Where supply air is delivered to a bedroom and the only return is in the hallway, closing the door pressurises the room. The supply air must find its way out through whatever leakage paths exist, typically into the attic or the wall cavities, while the rest of the house goes slightly negative and draws in outdoor air. The result is comfort complaints in the closed room, higher energy use, and in buildings with naturally vented combustion appliances, a contribution to backdrafting.

Returns in individual rooms, transfer grilles, or generous door undercuts all address this.

The 672 series carries no filter frame; the system filter is located at the air handler.
