The Hart & Cooley 43355 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 20 by 16 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

Steel construction with a white powder finish is the default specification for residential and light commercial returns, and its practical advantages are durability and paintability. A steel grille tolerates the knocks it receives in a hallway or stairwell better than a plastic one, holds its shape when removed and refitted, and accepts paint where the grille must match a wall colour other than white.

Where a grille is to be painted, the face should be removed from the opening and finished separately rather than sprayed in place. Painting a grille in situ deposits overspray on the wall around it and, more consequentially, builds paint in the gaps between the bars. Successive repaintings over the life of a building progressively close the free area, which raises face velocity, increases noise, and adds static pressure to the return path. Grilles heavily clogged with paint are a common finding in older properties.

The 20 by 16 inch size suits a moderate return airflow as a primary return on a smaller system or one of several returns on a larger one.

The 672 series has no filter frame. Applications include residential and light commercial return air openings in walls and ceilings.
