Hart & Cooley 672 20X14 043354 White Return Air Grille

The Hart & Cooley 43354 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 20 by 14 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

The dimensional convention deserves attention when ordering. Grille sizes are stated width by height, and a 20 by 14 grille is not interchangeable with a 14 by 20 despite passing the same airflow. The wall or ceiling opening is cut to one orientation, and a grille supplied in the opposite orientation will not fit it.

This is a routine source of returned material, because the two sizes appear in catalogues adjacent to one another and the distinction is easy to overlook when ordering from a written list. Confirming the orientation of the actual opening, rather than the sequence in which the dimensions were written down, resolves it.

Orientation also affects appearance. A grille wider than it is tall reads differently in a wall than a tall narrow one, and where several returns are visible in the same space, consistent orientation matters visually.

The 20 by 14 size suits a moderate return airflow as a secondary return or a primary return on a smaller system.

The 672 series has no filter frame; the system filter must be located at the air handler.

Applications include residential and light commercial return air openings in walls and ceilings.
