The Hart & Cooley 13991 is a 672 series return air grille measuring 16 by 25 inches nominal, finished in white steel.

Return grille sizing is governed by face velocity rather than by matching the duct behind it. Air passing through the grille's free area generates noise, and that noise rises sharply with velocity. Residential return grilles are commonly sized for a face velocity in the region of 300 to 500 feet per minute, and grilles sized appreciably above that range become an audible presence in a quiet room, particularly a bedroom or study.

Free area is the figure that matters, not gross size. The bars occupy a proportion of the face, so a 16 by 25 inch grille passes air through considerably less than 400 square inches of opening. Manufacturers publish free area for this reason, and sizing calculations should use it.

The 16 by 25 inch size is a common residential return, matching the footprint of a widely used filter size and suiting a primary return on a moderate capacity system.
