Great Neck GNS12113 Sheffield 12113 Ultimate Lock Back Utility Knife

The Great Neck GNS12113 is a Sheffield® 12113 Ultimate Lock Back® utility knife, 6 inch, with a stainless steel blade and aluminium handle, in blue. It accepts all standard utility blades, includes one blade, and is supplied 12 per pack.

The lock back mechanism is the specification that matters, and it is a safety feature rather than a convenience. A folding knife without a lock can close on the user's fingers under load — a knife cutting through resistant material transmits force back along the blade, and a folder that gives way at that moment causes exactly the injury it looks like it would. A lock back holds the blade open until it is deliberately released.

Accepting all standard utility blades is the practical specification. Utility blades are a commodity available everywhere, which means a blade is never a reason to stop work. A knife requiring a proprietary blade is a knife that eventually sits unused.

The aluminium handle gives strength without the weight of steel, on a tool carried in a pocket all day.

One point worth stating: utility knives are the leading cause of hand lacerations in many industrial operations, and the cause is almost always cutting toward the hand. Cut away from the body, retract or fold the blade when not cutting, and replace blades before they get dull — a dull blade requires more force, and more force is what slips.

The 12 per pack quantity suits kitting out a crew.
