Product Highlights
Description
The General Tools GTM18 is a round head protractor with a 6 inch adjustable arm, in ground stainless steel, with ultra-fine etched graduations reading 0 to 180 degrees in forward and reverse.
The round head is the choice when the square head would be in the way. A square head has flat reference faces and needs a flat surface to register against — excellent on a machined face, useless against a curve, in a corner, or where the head's corners collide with the work. A round head has no corners to foul. It sits into places the square head cannot and rotates freely against a curved or irregular surface.
That is the entire basis for choosing between the two, and shops that do varied work carry both.
The etched graduations matter for a stated reason: they will not wear or rub off. A protractor lives in a shop, gets handled with oily hands, and slides across steel. Printed markings disappear; etched markings are cut into the material and last as long as the tool.
Reading forward and reverse from 0 to 180 lets the tool be used from either side without mental arithmetic — which is where angle errors come from.
The 6 inch adjustable arm sets bevels, takes measurements, and transfers angles.
Ground stainless steel supplies precision and corrosion resistance.
Applications include angle transfer, bevel setting, machining, fabrication, and layout.
Users include machinists, toolmakers, fabricators, and draftsmen.
