General Tools GTM147 6" Digital Fractional Caliper

The General Tools GTM147 is a 6 inch digital fractional caliper, reading in inches, millimetres, and fractions, with accuracy to 0.001 inch, in stainless steel, supplied with a foam padded plastic case.

The fractional display is the feature and it addresses a mismatch that costs time every day in American shops. Calipers read in decimal inches. American construction, woodworking, and much fabrication work in fractions — 3/8, 11/16, 1-1/4. So a tradesman measures 0.687 and then has to convert it in his head to 11/16, every time, and conversion under time pressure is where mistakes are made.

A caliper that displays the fraction directly removes that step. It is a small thing that turns out to matter a great deal to anyone who is not a machinist.

The three-system display — inches, millimetres, and fractions — also handles the reality that a shop meets metric and imperial on the same job.

The 0.001 inch accuracy is the measurement specification.

Calipers measure four ways, and buyers frequently use only one. The jaws take outside measurements; the reversed upper jaws take inside measurements; the tail rod takes depth; and the step face takes step measurements. All four are on the tool.

The padded case is not packaging — a caliper is a precision instrument, and one knocked around in a drawer loses its accuracy.
