DiversiTech Butt Connector. 12-10 In 6231LX

The DiversiTech 6231LX is an insulated butt connector sized for 12 to 10 gauge conductors, used to splice heavier wire end to end.

The 12-10 gauge range positions this connector for branch circuit and equipment power wiring rather than control conductors. Applications include extending a damaged conductor, joining equipment pigtails to field wiring, and repairing cable runs where replacement is impractical.

Crimp quality governs splice performance, and at these conductor sizes the stakes are higher than in control wiring because the current is higher. A properly executed crimp compresses the barrel fully onto the conductor strands, producing a cold weld that is mechanically strong and electrically equivalent to continuous conductor. An inadequate crimp made with pliers instead of a proper crimping tool leaves a high resistance joint that heats under load. Heat accelerates oxidation at the interface, resistance rises further, and the connection progresses toward failure. In a 20 or 30 amp circuit this can become a genuine fire hazard rather than merely an intermittent fault.

Heavier conductors require a crimp tool with adequate mechanical advantage; hand tools sized for control wiring cannot produce full compression on 10 gauge conductor.

The insulation sleeve covers the barrel and part of the conductor insulation, preventing accidental contact and providing limited strain relief.

Applications include HVAC equipment wiring repair, motor and compressor lead splicing, disconnect and junction box connections, and general branch circuit repair. Use the correct tool, verify with a pull test, and match connector size to conductor gauge.
