The length is not for convenience. Torque is force times distance, and 500 ft-lb through a short handle would require a force no person can apply. A 42 inch handle brings 500 ft-lb into the range of a human being leaning on it — roughly 143 pounds of force at the very end. That is a real effort, and it is achievable.

Which leads to the rule that matters most on a wrench this size: the force must be applied at the handle's grip point, and nowhere else. The calibration assumes a specific distance. A hand six inches further in reads low; an extension on the end reads high, and by a lot. On a 42 inch wrench that error is large enough to matter on a structural connection.

The other rules apply. Store at the lowest setting — a compressed spring takes a set. Never loosen with it. Recalibrate periodically, and immediately after a drop.
