The NIC41102 is a silversmith's riffler file with cut edges, cut 2, 7.5 inch long, silversmith's riffler shape, hard stamped, steel, style 10.
Note a data point to verify: the source lists file length as 7.5 inch and overall length as 7.09 inch. Rifflers are double-ended and their length conventions differ from ordinary files, but overall should not read shorter than the file. Confirm against Nicholson's specification.
A riffler is a file with a difference that explains itself the moment you see one: the cutting surfaces are at the ends, and the ends are bent, curved, or spoon-shaped. The middle is a plain shank held in the hand.
That geometry exists for work an ordinary file physically cannot enter. A concave interior, a deep recess, the inside of a formed shape, an undercut behind a raised detail — a straight file cannot get its cutting face onto any of those, because the rest of the file is in the way. A curved end reaches around the obstruction.
Rifflers are double-ended, so each tool carries two profiles.
Cut 2 is a fine grade — riffler work is finishing and detail rather than stock removal.
The silversmith's designation indicates the profile set is chosen for hollowware and jewellery work.
Applications include silversmithing, jewellery, die work, mould finishing, and carving.
