The NIC18861N is a pattern maker's cabinet rasp with cut edges, smooth cut, 0.142 inch thick, 0.866 inch wide, 10 inch long, half round shape, hard stamped, steel.
Two specifications place this at the fine end of the rasp range: smooth cut, and the pattern maker's designation.
Pattern makers build the wooden masters used to make foundry moulds, and the work is unforgiving. Every surface defect on a pattern reproduces in every casting made from it, forever. Draft angles, fillets, and curves all have to be right, and the surface has to be genuinely finished rather than approximately so.
That is why a pattern maker's rasp is finer than a cabinet rasp. It removes less per stroke and leaves a surface far closer to final — which means less work afterward and less chance of going past the line, which on a pattern cannot be undone.
The general rasp principle still applies: individual raised teeth, punched up one at a time, each tearing its own chip with space around it to clear. That is why rasps cut wood where files clog solid.
At smooth cut this bridges toward file territory — the last shaping before abrasive.
The half round shape gives a flat face and a curved face.
Fit a handle.
Applications include pattern making, cabinetmaking, instrument work, and carving.
