The NIC17683N is a cabinet rasp with single cut edges, regular second cut, 0.18 inch thick, 1.115 inch wide, 10 inch long, half round shape, hard stamped, steel.

A rasp is not a file and the difference is fundamental rather than a matter of degree.

A file has rows of teeth cut across its face — continuous ridges that shear a thin chip. A rasp has individual raised teeth, punched up from the surface one at a time, standing proud and unconnected. Each tooth tears out its own chip rather than shearing.

That construction is what lets a rasp cut wood. Wood clogs a file within a few strokes — the fine teeth pack with fibre and stop cutting entirely, which is why filing wood is an exercise in frustration. A rasp's isolated teeth have space around them, so the chips clear and it keeps working.

The trade is the surface. A rasp leaves a rough, torn finish that has to be cleaned up with a file or abrasive afterward. It is a shaping tool, not a finishing one.

Regular second cut is the middle grade — coarser than a smooth rasp, finer than a wood rasp.

The half round shape gives a flat face and a curved face.

Fit a handle. The tang is a bare spike.
