The NIC06898N is a knife file with a sharp edge, bastard cut, knife shape, 0.175 inch thick, 0.866 inch wide, 8 inch long, 10.13 inch overall, hard stamped, steel, unhandled.
The knife shape is exactly what the name says: the cross-section tapers from a back to a sharp edge, like a blade. That geometry exists to do one thing, and it is a thing no other file shape can do.
It gets into an acute angle. Where two surfaces meet at less than ninety degrees — a dovetail, a V-groove, a keyway corner, an undercut — a flat file cannot enter, because its own thickness fouls one wall before the face touches the other. A knife file's tapering section follows the angle in.
That makes it a specialist rather than a general file, and it is the file people discover they need rather than the one they buy first. Anyone working dovetails, tapered slots, or acute internal corners will not manage without one.
Bastard is the coarse grade: stock removal rather than finish work.
The dimensions are consistent here — 8 inch file, 10.13 inch overall, giving a two-inch tang.
