Product Highlights
Description
The NIC03665NN is a flat file, double cut on the sides and single cut on the edges, bastard cut, flat shape, 0.155 inch thick, 0.9 inch wide, 10 inch long, hard stamped, steel, unhandled.
Double cut versus single cut is the distinction worth understanding, and it is a different axis entirely from the bastard/second/smooth grades.
Single cut files have parallel rows of teeth running diagonally across the face. Each tooth is a continuous ridge, and the file shears a broad, shallow chip. That produces a smoother surface and it is what sharpening, soft metals, and finishing want.
Double cut files have a second set of rows crossing the first, which breaks the ridges into individual teeth. Each tooth takes a small chip, and there are far more of them. That cuts faster and leaves a rougher surface.
So double cut on the faces means fast stock removal, and single cut on the edges means the edge can work against an adjacent surface without tearing it.
Files cut on the push stroke only. Dragging the file back across the work under pressure does not cut — it rubs the teeth backwards against the metal and dulls them. Lift on the return.
Never use a file without a handle. The tang is a spike, and a catching file drives it into the palm.
Applications include metalwork, fabrication, and maintenance.
