Sixteen feet is the length that matters most in construction, and the reason is not arbitrary. It spans a room. It covers a standard wall, a sheet of plywood laid out, a stud wall's full run of layout. Most importantly, a 16 ft tape reaches the far side of ordinary rooms without a second person — which is why it became the default carpenter's tape.
