Fiberglass rather than steel is the specification and it is a safety decision before it is anything else. A steel tape is a conductor. Two hundred feet of steel tape being walked across a site, near overhead lines, or through a substation is a conductor being carried by a person — and this is a recognised electrocution mechanism, not a hypothetical one. Fiberglass does not conduct.

The second reason is durability of a different kind: fiberglass does not kink. A steel tape that gets stepped on or bent sharply is permanently damaged at that point. Fiberglass takes it.

The honest limitation: fiberglass stretches under tension more than steel does. For construction layout and general distance measurement that is acceptable. For precision work at long distances, tension and stretch have to be accounted for, and a steel tape is more stable.

The 4-arm reel is the winding frame — 200 ft of tape takes real effort to wind, and arms give purchase.

No auto-lock means the reel does not hold position on its own.
