One-piece is the specification and it is the entire reason a rule like this exists alongside tape measures. A tape has a hook at the end, and the hook floats — deliberately, by exactly the thickness of the hook, so it reads correctly both hooked over an edge and butted against one. That floating hook is a source of error whenever it is bent, worn, or loose, which it eventually is.

A one-piece rule has no hook, no joint, and nothing to shift. It reads what it reads. For layout, machine setup, and checking, that certainty is the point.

The rigidity matters as much. A rule stays straight while a tape bends, which means a rule can be laid across a workpiece, stood on edge, and used as a straightedge for marking. A tape cannot do any of that.

Laser etching is worth noting: etched graduations are cut into the steel rather than printed on it, so they do not wear off with use and solvent.

At 1/16 inch thick and 1.25 inch wide this is a substantial rule rather than a flexible scale.
