Long pattern is the opposite specification from a stubby, and it buys the thing a stubby gives up: leverage. Torque is force times distance, so at 11.4 inches this wrench applies substantially more torque to a 20 mm fastener for the same effort at the hand. That is what a seized, corroded, or heavily torqued fastener needs — and it is also easier on the user, because the alternative to leverage is force, and force is what slips and barks knuckles.

The cost is access. A long wrench needs room to swing and room to sit, and there are plenty of fasteners it cannot reach. This is why a working set carries both patterns rather than choosing.

The 12 point box end engages at twice as many positions as a 6 point, halving the swing needed to catch the next bite. The trade is that 12 point loads the corners of the hex rather than the flats, so on a genuinely seized fastener a 6 point is the safer choice — 12 point can round it.
