Yellow Jacket Tube Expander Flare & Swage Kit

The Yellow Jacket 60440 is a combined flaring and swaging kit for refrigeration tube preparation.

Combining flaring and swaging capability in one kit reflects how the two operations are used. Both are tube end preparations, both are needed on the same jobs, and both use similar clamping arrangements, so a single kit covers a large part of the tube work a technician performs.

The two operations serve different purposes. A flare creates a mechanical joint that can be assembled and disassembled with a flare nut, used on ductless equipment and service connections where the joint may need to be broken. A swage creates a socket for a brazed joint, which is permanent.

Choosing between them is generally determined by the equipment. Ductless manufacturers specify flares at the indoor and outdoor connections. Line set joins and general pipework are brazed, where a swage is appropriate.

Where either would work, a brazed swage is the more reliable long term joint, since it has no mechanical seal to loosen or degrade. A flare is chosen where serviceability is wanted.

Both operations require the same preparation: square cut, thorough deburring, and suitable tube temper.

Confirm the kit covers the tube sizes required, keep dies and cones clean, and inspect every finished flare or swage for cracks and splits before use.
