Yellow Jacket Tube Expander 3/8 - 1-1/8 Exp Kit

The Yellow Jacket 60407 is a tube expander kit covering 3/8 to 1-1/8 inch tubing sizes.

A kit spanning this range covers most of the tube sizes encountered in residential and light commercial refrigeration work, from liquid lines through to the larger suction lines on bigger equipment.

Range matters because expanding tools are size specific. Each head or mandrel forms one diameter, and a tool covering a single size is of limited use on a service vehicle where the next job may involve anything.

Larger tube sizes require considerably more force to expand, and the tool has to be built for it. A tool that handles 3/8 inch comfortably may struggle at 1-1/8 inch, and forcing it damages both the tool and the tube.

The tube itself has to be suitable. Soft annealed copper expands cleanly. Hard drawn copper will split unless annealed first, and tube that has been previously worked at the same point is already hardened.

Splits are usually visible at the mouth of the expansion and sometimes only after brazing, when the joint leaks.

Confirm the kit covers the sizes required, that the tube temper suits expansion, and that heads are in good condition. Cut square, deburr, expand to the correct depth, and inspect for splitting before cleaning and brazing the joint.
