Uniweld Gas Regulator Nitrogen Reg RHP400

The Uniweld RHP400 is a nitrogen regulator for refrigeration pressure testing and purging applications.

Pressure testing a refrigerant circuit with nitrogen is a defined procedure, and the regulator is what makes it controllable.

The test pressure is specified by the equipment manufacturer or the governing standard, and it depends on the refrigerant and the design pressure of the system. Testing above the system's design pressure risks damaging components, particularly on equipment containing items with lower ratings than the pipework.

The test should be held long enough to reveal a small leak. A joint with a very small leak holds pressure for several minutes with no measurable change, so a brief test proves little.

Recording pressure and ambient temperature at the start and end of the test is necessary because gas pressure varies with temperature. A pressure drop that occurred because the afternoon cooled into evening is easily mistaken for a leak, and a leak can be masked by a temperature rise.

Soap solution applied to each joint locates a leak that the test has revealed.

Nitrogen is used because it is dry and inert. Oxygen must never be used, and compressed air introduces moisture.

Confirm the regulator's pressure range suits the test pressures required, that the cylinder connection matches, and inspect the regulator and hoses before use.
