Product Highlights
Description
The Harris 3000648 is a nitrogen regulator for controlling gas pressure from nitrogen cylinders.
A regulator reduces high cylinder pressure to a controlled working pressure, and for nitrogen work in refrigeration it serves two distinct purposes.
Purging during brazing requires a very low flow at low pressure, sufficient to displace air from the tube without cooling the joint or disturbing the flame.
Pressure testing requires a controlled and considerably higher pressure, set to the value specified for the system and refrigerant.
The distinction matters because a regulator has to cover both, and the working pressure range determines whether it can. A regulator adequate for purging may not deliver the pressure needed for testing.
Nitrogen cylinders are filled to high pressure, and that pressure appears at the regulator inlet. Regulator failure or misuse can allow full cylinder pressure into the system, which is why a pressure relief arrangement is important and why the system should never be exposed to unregulated cylinder pressure.
Regulators are precision devices. A dropped regulator may be damaged internally without visible signs and should be tested before use.
Oil and grease must be kept off regulator connections as a matter of habit, since the same discipline applies to oxygen equipment where contamination causes ignition.
Confirm the regulator's inlet connection matches the cylinder valve, that the outlet range suits both purging and testing, and inspect before each use.
