Permatex PER82180 3 Oz. Ultra Black Silicone Gasket Maker

The Permatex PER82180 is a 3 oz Ultra Black silicone gasket maker.

The Ultra designation is the specification and it identifies this as a sensor-safe formulation — which is the most consequential distinction in the RTV category on any modern vehicle.

The reason is chemistry. Many conventional RTV silicones cure by releasing acetic acid; the vinegar smell while curing is exactly that. In an open joint it evaporates and nothing happens. In a closed system — an engine's crankcase, an intake, anything sharing air with an oxygen sensor — the acid attacks metals and poisons the sensor. A poisoned oxygen sensor throws a fault code and gets replaced, and nobody connects it to the gasket maker used three months earlier.

Sensor-safe formulations cure without releasing it. On anything with engine management, that is not optional.

Ultra Black is Permatex's oil-resistant sensor-safe grade, which puts it on oil pans, timing covers, and transmission housings — flanges that live in oil.

What RTV gives generally is movement. It cures flexible and stays flexible, accommodating the expansion and vibration that would crack a rigid sealant.

Surface preparation decides whether it holds. Clean, degrease, and let it cure before filling the system.
