The Loctite LOC88551 is Loctite PST 565 thread sealant, controlled strength, 50 ml tube / 1.69 oz.

Controlled strength is the specification and it is the point of 565. A pipe thread sealant has to do two contradictory things: seal completely, and let the fitting come apart again. Too weak and it leaks; too strong and the next technician is heating a fitting on a live plant to change an instrument.

Controlled strength means the seal is reliable while the fitting still releases with ordinary wrenches. For instrumentation, gauges, and any fitting that gets serviced, that is what is wanted.

PST means Pipe Sealant with Teflon, and the case against tape is the reason this product exists. PTFE tape shreds while being wrapped, and the fragments travel downstream into valve seats, orifices, and control components, where they cause faults that take a day to trace and cost far more than the fitting. A liquid anaerobic has nothing to shred — it fills the thread's helical path and cures there.

Tape is also slippery, which makes over-tightening easy, and over-tightening a tapered thread splits the female fitting.

The cure is anaerobic: liquid in air, solid when air is excluded and metal ions are present.

Applications include pipe fittings, instrumentation, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
