The Johnson Level JHL1741-4800 is a 48 inch aluminum box level.

The 48 inch length is the specification and length is not a convenience on a level — it is accuracy. A level measures the deviation across the surface it spans, so a longer level averages out local irregularity and reveals the true plane. A 24 inch level on a stud reads that 24 inches; a 48 inch level reads the wall. For plumbing a door frame, checking a wall, or setting formwork, the 4 foot is the tool and a shorter one will lie to you convincingly.

Note the series: 1741 is Johnson's non-magnetic model. The magnetic equivalent is the 1721. Non-magnetic is preferred for wood and concrete work; steel studs and door frames want the magnetic version.

The vials are solid block acrylic — they will not fog, leak, or break — with SurroundView, which reflects ambient light so they stay readable in poorly lit areas.

Shock-absorbing end caps protect the frame when the level is dropped, which is what normally destroys a level's accuracy. Accuracy is stated as .029 degrees (0.5 mm/m) standard, .044 degrees (0.750 mm/m) inverted.
