Worth knowing before ordering: the 1741 series is the non-magnetic model. Johnson's magnetic equivalent is the 1721 series. That distinction is the first thing to get right, and it is not in most listings. Non-magnetic is the correct choice for wood and concrete work; for steel studs and door frames, the magnetic 1721 is the one you want.

The vials are solid block acrylic, which will not fog, leak, or break — the three ways a conventional glass vial fails. They carry Johnson's SurroundView feature, which reflects ambient light to keep them readable in dim conditions. Anyone who has tried to read a level inside a stud bay or under a floor will understand why that matters.

Shock-absorbing end caps protect the level when dropped, which is the event that puts most levels out of true. A level that has been knocked out of calibration is worse than no level, because it gives a confident wrong answer.
