The Jackson Safety JKSS32151 is a Sellstrom DP4 Series face shield with a flip-up IR window and ratcheting headgear — a clear lens with a shade 5 IR flip lens, anti-fog coated.

The flip-up arrangement solves a workflow problem that anyone doing gas cutting will recognise. Cutting needs a shade 5 filter. Everything either side of the cut — measuring, positioning, inspecting, moving the work — needs to be seen clearly, and shade 5 makes that nearly impossible. With a fixed shade the operator lifts the whole shield to see, which means the face is unprotected during the very handling that produces the burns.

A flip-up puts a shade 5 lens in front of a clear one. Flip it down to cut, flip it up to work — and the clear window stays across the face the entire time. Protection never leaves.

Shade 5 IR is the conventional level for oxy-fuel gas welding, cutting, brazing, and soldering. The boundary that matters: it is not an arc welding shade. Arc processes need 9 to 13, and a shade 5 lens at an arc causes arc eye — which arrives hours later, long after the exposure.

Ratcheting headgear adjusts one-handed with gloves on.

A face shield is secondary protection — eye protection goes underneath, always.
