Irwin IRW1910ZR Pipe Tap NPT tap pip 2"

The Irwin IRW1910ZR is a pipe tap, NPT type, in 2 inch.

This is the large end of the pipe tap range and everything about using it follows from that. NPT threads are tapered — the thread narrows along its length so the flanks wedge tight and seal on the threads themselves. A tapered tap therefore cuts an increasing engagement with every turn, and at 2 inch the amount of metal being removed is substantial.

The practical consequence is that this tap requires serious leverage and a properly secured workpiece. A 2 inch NPT tap will twist a part out of a vise that a smaller tap would not trouble, and it will break if forced or if chips are allowed to pack. Cutting fluid and frequent backing off to clear are not optional at this size.

Note the nominal sizing convention: a 2 inch NPT thread measures roughly 2.4 inches across. Pipe sizes are names, not measurements.

Tapping depth sets how far the fitting seats before it tightens, and it cannot be adjusted afterward.

Thread sealant or PTFE tape remains standard practice — the taper seals mechanically, the sealant fills the helical path.

Applications include process piping, hydraulics, large-bore plumbing, and heavy machinery repair.
