The Irwin IRW1907ZR is a pipe tap, NPT type, in 1 inch.

NPT means National Pipe Taper, and the taper is the whole design. The thread narrows along its length, so as a fitting is threaded in the flanks wedge progressively tighter and the joint seals on the threads themselves rather than on a gasket.

At 1 inch this is a substantial pipe tap and the torque required is worth anticipating. A tapered tap cuts an increasing engagement the whole way down — every turn is cutting more thread than the last — which means a 1 inch NPT tap demands considerably more force than a straight tap of the same nominal size. This is a tap for a proper tap wrench with real leverage, not a T-handle.

The depth you tap determines how far the fitting seats before it tightens, and there is no correcting it afterward. Too shallow and the fitting stands proud; too deep and it never grips.

Note that 1 inch is a nominal pipe size rather than a measurement — a 1 inch NPT thread measures around 1.3 inches across.

Use cutting fluid and back off regularly to clear chips. Thread sealant or PTFE tape remains standard practice.
