FyterTech NPSEBOOM-510 NPS Essentials Oil Only Economy 4" Boom 20 Gallon

The FyterTech NPSEBOOM-510 is an NPS Essentials oil only economy 4 inch boom, 20 gallon absorbency, 4 inch wide, 10 ft long, white, specifically for marine based spills, 4 booms per case.

Oil only is the specification and it depends on a property that is easy to state and easy to miss: this material is hydrophobic. It repels water and absorbs hydrocarbons.

That is what makes a marine boom possible. Dropped on water, an oil only boom floats — it does not take on water, it does not sink, and it selectively picks up the oil while leaving the water behind. A universal sorbent in the same situation absorbs water until it is saturated and useless, then sinks, taking the problem to the bottom.

So the white and grey colour convention across this range is functional rather than decorative. White is oil only, grey is universal, and using the wrong one on water is not a small mistake.

A boom rather than a pad or a sock is about containment. Booms are laid to corral a slick and stop it spreading before absorption even begins — because a contained spill is a small problem and a spread one is a large one.

At 4 inch by 10 ft with 20 gallon absorbency, this is a working length for docks, marinas, and outfalls.

Applications include marine spills, docks, and shorelines.
