Uniweld Fuel Gas Cylinder Acetylene Tank / Empty

The Uniweld MC is an empty MC size acetylene cylinder for use with air acetylene and oxy acetylene torch equipment.

Acetylene requires specific handling that other fuel gases do not, and the reasons are worth understanding rather than treating as arbitrary rules.

Acetylene is unstable above a modest pressure and can decompose explosively without any oxygen present. It is therefore not stored as a compressed gas in the ordinary sense. The cylinder contains a porous mass saturated with acetone, and the acetylene is dissolved in that acetone at a pressure it can tolerate safely.

Several handling requirements follow directly from this construction.

Cylinders must be stored and used upright. Laid on its side, liquid acetone can reach the valve and be drawn out with the gas, which damages equipment and reduces the cylinder's capacity permanently. A cylinder that has been on its side should stand upright for a period before use.

Withdrawal rate is limited, since drawing too fast pulls acetone out with the gas. The limit relates to cylinder size.

Working pressure must never exceed the limit specified for acetylene, which is well below what the regulator can deliver.

Cylinders must be secured, valve caps fitted when not in use, and connections leak tested with soap solution before lighting.
