System Sensor Watertight Smoke Detector D4120W

The System Sensor D4120W is a watertight photoelectric duct smoke detector, for installation in ductwork exposed to moisture.

The watertight enclosure addresses installation locations where a standard detector housing would be compromised. Duct smoke detectors are frequently mounted on rooftop units, on exterior ductwork, and in outdoor air intake sections, all of which expose the housing to driven rain, condensation, and washdown.

Water ingress into a smoke detector produces either of two failures, and both are serious. Corrosion or contamination of the sensing chamber can cause false alarms, which on a system that shuts down air handling and signals the fire alarm is highly disruptive and, if repeated, leads to the detector being disabled by frustrated building staff. Alternatively the detector simply fails, and because a smoke detector gives no indication of a failure to detect, the loss of protection is silent until it is tested.

The watertight housing prevents both by keeping moisture out of the sensing chamber and electronics.

As with any duct detector, correctly sized sampling tubes spanning the duct are essential to the detector functioning, and installation, testing, and documentation are governed by fire code.

Applications include rooftop units, exterior ductwork, outdoor air intakes, and washdown environments in commercial and industrial buildings.
