System Sensor Duct Smoke Detector 3FT Sampling Tube

The System Sensor DST3 is a 3 foot sampling tube for duct smoke detectors, collecting an air sample across the width of the duct.

Sizing the sampling tube to the duct is a straightforward requirement that is frequently compromised in the field, generally because the duct turned out to be wider than expected and the tube on the van was the one that got fitted.

The consequence is a detector that samples only part of the airstream. Whether that matters depends on where smoke enters the duct and how well it has mixed by the time it reaches the detector, which is not something an installer can predict. The requirement exists precisely because the answer cannot be assumed.

At three feet this tube suits ducts up to approximately that width, covering a substantial proportion of commercial rectangular ductwork.

Detector location matters alongside tube length. Duct detectors should be positioned in a straight run with sufficient distance from bends, dampers, and branch takeoffs that the airflow is reasonably uniform, since turbulent or stratified flow at the sampling point undermines the sample regardless of tube length.

Manufacturer instructions specify the minimum straight duct length required upstream and downstream.
